Introduction to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a type of natural gas primarily composed of methane (CH4), which is compressed to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. This compression allows for easier storage and transportation, making CNG a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel.
What is CNG?
CNG is natural gas that has been compressed to a high pressure, typically between 200 to 250 bar (2900 to 3600 psi). This high pressure reduces the gas's volume, enabling it to be stored in cylinders and used as a fuel. Natural gas, in its natural state, is a mixture of hydrocarbons, primarily methane, and may contain small amounts of ethane, propane, butane, and other gases.
Uses of CNG
CNG is used across various sectors due to its versatility and environmental benefits:
- Automotive: CNG is a popular fuel for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, including cars, buses, and trucks. It powers internal combustion engines modified or specifically designed to run on natural gas.
